Description:
Badly corroded metal rule printed with a single scale (in centimeters, with values ranging from 0 to 103). The scale is printed along the length of the rule, near its center, where a darkened strip is marked for tenths of centimeters. On both sides of the scale are rectangular channels.

The rule is stored in a wooden box with brass hinges and two metal clasps. A Chemical Laboratory of Harvard College label is affixed to the lid.

FunctionFor measuring vertical distances in cases where the scale cannot be placed very close to the object in question, for example in determining the level of liquid in a capillary tube. The bar would be fixed vertically in a stand, and a telescope and vernier scale attached to it.
