FunctionThis is a demonstration of one of the earliest known hydraulic machines, the Archimedean screw.
An archaic form of water pump, the Archimedean screw can lift water upwards by rotating a coiled tube around an inclined axis. Every rotation of the screw, the bottom end collects a quantity of water, which is moved upwards as the screw rotates following the bottom end of each turn of the screw. At the top end water spurts of water come out with each turn.
