Nickel-plated brass tube, very finely made, has a small window in the center. Behind the window is a small high-quality mirror that slides up and down the tube in a track. There is a red disk on a stem that can be rotated in order to swing the disk in front of the window and block light from reflecting off the mirror. A needle probe is at one end of the tube. A rotating, plunger-like device is on the other end. The instrument has a mounting bracket near the center.
