DescriptionThis is a Bausch & Lomb continental compound microscope, model CD. It is brass throughout with a large blackened horseshoe-shaped base and a brass arm and body tube. The inclinable joint has a locking device to fix the microscope at any angle. The locking lever has an ivory handle.
The draw tube is nickel-plated, graduated in millimeters, and slides in a cloth-lined body tube. A triple nosepiece is nickeled. The coarse focus is by rack and pinion. The fine focus is the B&L standard triangular bar form, with a graduated micrometer screw on top of the pillar.
There is a rotating, circular, mechanical stage with a nickeled top and verniers. An elaborate substage apparatus, referred to as a "Complete Substage" in the 1900 B&L catalogue, is located beneath. The substage equipment consists of an Abbe condenser and two iris diaphragms. One of the diaphragms is removable and sits on a ring above the condenser. The second diaphragm is larger and sits on a swing out mount below the condenser. It can be adjusted off-center by rack and pinion.
The substage mirror and case are missing.
One objective is a Bausch & Lomb "Variable, 3 - 5." The others are 2/3 and 1/6. The ocular is 1.
