Harvard-type inductorium

Date: 1900-1930
Inventory Number: DW0088
Classification: Induction Coil
Subject:
electricity & magnetism, physiology,
Attributed to: Harvard Apparatus Company (1901-present)
Dimensions:
9.3 x 24.5 x 8.8 cm (3 11/16 x 9 5/8 x 3 7/16 in.)
Material:
wood, gutta-percha, bakelite, copper,
Description:
Electric current is applied to a sliding magnetized coil through one end of the support. The coil can move on parallel rods graduated in centimeters (0-2-4-...-12) and can be tilted from 0 to 90°. It can also slide over the immobile core consisting of copper wires. The amount of electricity induced in the core is gathered via the binding posts attached to the wood support.

FunctionInstrument used to vary the inductance of a system, or the ratio of the magnetic flux to the electric current.
Curatorial RemarksThis model of the du Bois-Reymond-type inductorium was better known as a Harvard inductorium. For a representation, see Dennis E. Jackson, Experimental Pharmacology (Saint Louis: C.V. Mosby Company, 1917), 35. [Online at Google Books here.]
