triode demonstration model

Date: 1900-1920
Inventory Number: 1997-1-1281
Classification: Demonstration Model
Subject:
demonstration apparatus, vacuum tubes,
Maker: Richard Müller-Uri (1859 - 1929)
Cultural Region:
Germany,
Place of Origin:
Braunschweig,
Dimensions:
34.5 x 14 x 14 cm (13 9/16 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 in.)
Material:
glass, metal,
Description:
A cylindrical tube held vertically by one of its side arms on a wooden turned stand. It has two flat disk electrodes at both ends, plus two other electrodes: one pointed coming from a long side tube near the bottom, and one that forms a flat ring on the inside walls of the tube in the middle and contains a disk that divides the tube in two parts, but has holes in it.
Signedsticker on bulb: RICH. MÜLLER-URI / 2176. / BRAUNSCHWEIG
FunctionThis is a demonstrational tube to show the working of a triode or simple amplifier. One can establish an electric current by subjecting the cathode and anode to different voltages. Electrons produced at the cathode would be accelerated towards the anode, passing through the holes of the plate in the middle. If one connects the middle plate to a voltage negative voltage with respect to the cathode, the amount of electrons flowing through it is diminished, so the current is weaker. If there is enough gas in the tube, this effect could be observable
