Description:
A metal box painted black. Small circular feet on all four corners of one side. An adjacent side has a rectangular nameplate. The side opposite the one featuring the feet has nine connectors that have been soldered over many times.

FunctionA transformer makes use of inductively coupled conductors -- the transformer's coils or "windings" -- to change voltages. AC power running through the primary coil can be "stepped up" or "stepped down" depending on the ratio of number of windings in the two coils.
