4-inch heated cathode high vacuum x-ray tube

Date: circa 1935
Inventory Number: VT4756
Classification: X-ray Tube
Subject:
medicine, radiology,
Maker: E. Machlett & Son (1897 - 1957)
Cultural Region:
United States,
Place of Origin:
New York,
Dimensions:
10.2 x 48 x 10.2 cm (4 x 18 7/8 x 4 in.)
bulb: 10.2 cm (4 in.)
Material:
glass, metal,
Description:
X-ray tube with a tungsten in copper angled anode. Heated cathode in a straight line. Cathode side has a lightbulb screw. Intended for producing line-shaped source of x-rays on target.

Signedstamped in white on bulb inside an oval: MACHLETT / (inside square) MR-50
Inscribedstamped on copper inside tube: R5366
FunctionThis tube produces electrons by the heating of a cathode filament. These electrons are accelerated by a high voltage and hit the angled anode to produce the x-rays. In this model heat is dissipated by the bulb. In this tube the electrons strike the target along a line leading to the source of x-rays having the same shape.
ProvenanceFrom the Harvard Medical School.
