Figure legend reads thus: "Freeze-etch view of nucleus in an onion root tip cell. In this face view of the nuclear membrane, the pores are particularly evident. Through the pores the interior of the nucleus can be seen. Pieces of the endoplasmic reticulum closest to the nucleus resemble the nuclear membrane in appearance while those more distant are continuous memranes. x40,000. Photograph courtesy of Dr. D.
