FunctionThis instrument was used to observe the spectrum of burning elements. The burners would heat a substance, which would emit vapors. Intense light from the bulb would be condensed by the lens and shone on the vapor. Looking through the spectroscope one would see spectral lines, which would then be analyzed to determine what kind of substance was burning.
