handle
Date: circa 1800
Inventory Number: DW0101a
Classification: Handle
DescriptionThis series of cards represented a miscellaneous collection of about a dozen small 18th-century objects DPW called the "'thousand and one' collection," which included everything from handles for simple microscopes to pens to pliers to lancets to clinometers. The two firemakers (DW0101L and DW0101m), may have been added later.
Only two parts are still in CHSI's possession: DW0101d, which was renamed 1997-1-1855, and DW0101p, which was renamed 2007-1-0128.
The entire collection was sent to Christie's for auction in October 1983 but returned in January 1984. Later in 1984, four pieces (g, i, j, and k) were sold to the dealer Alain Brieux. In June 1987, six pieces (a, b, e, f, l, and m) went to DPW's daughter Susan Stauffer. What happened to parts (c) and (h) is unknown -- (h) has no card and no picture, and (c)'s card does not say anything about its later fate (or perhaps it does on the back, but the back didn't get scanned). Note that the series skipped from DW0101m to DW0101p. It's unclear whether DW0101n and DW0101o ever existed.
