Aerial photograph of taken from a very high altitude (39,120 ft.) over the agricultural region around Rushville, Indiana. Rectangular field patterns are clearly defined and constitute most of the picture. A river (the Flatrock?) meanders through the picture from the lower left to the upper right.

One of a series of 17 photographs and prints stored in the same envelope. They include aerial photographs, military pictures, landscapes, and a graph. They probably come from the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory.

Curatorial RemarksThe extreme height of 39,120 ft. would have made this photograph one of the first ones taken from an airplane at such altitude.
ProvenanceDavid Wheatland wrote in the back of 1998-1-1074o that the photograph came from the former Harvard Institute of Geographical Exploration on Divinity Avenue. It may, however, have been transferred to the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory before being recovered by him.

Some of the objects in the 1998-1-1074 series, including "o" have numbers written with pencil on them. The number on 1998-1-0174h suggests that these numbers correspond to pages in an album in which they are listed for reproduction.

All the photographs with a number on the back are more likely to come from the Institute of Geographical Exploration.

1998-1-1074e (aerial photograph of Rushville, Indiana) does not have a number, but it is likely part of the series as the inscriptions have the same handwriting.
