Historical AttributesThis is very likely a photographs taken as part of Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rice's expedition to Rio Parima, the source of the Orinoco River in Brazil in 1924-25. For the first time aerial photography was used in an expedition to the Amazon. The hydroplane, manned by Capt. A.W. Stevens, and Lieut. Walter Hinton, was assembled in Manaus and multiple gasoline depots had to be set up along the path of the airplane. The airplane was also used for scouting purposes.

More information about this expedition can be found in Popular Mechanics , Nov. 1925, pp. 786-89. It is available online at Google Books here.

ProvenanceDavid Wheatland wrote in the back of 1998-1-1074o that the photograph came from the former Harvard Institute of Geographical Exploration on Divinity Avenue. It may, however, have been transferred to the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory before being recovered by him.

Some of the objects in the 1998-1-1074 series, including "o" have numbers written with pencil on them. The number on 1998-1-0174h suggests that these numbers correspond to pages in an album in which they are listed for reproduction.

All the photographs with a number on the back are more likely to come from the Institute of Geographical Exploration.
