DescriptionA tape recorder made by Wollensak 3M Company, formerly Wollensak Optical Company.

The instrument is a reel to reel tape recorder with a combination headphone/speaker jack on one side. The device was used by Harvard's Department of Social Relations.

The instrument is housed in a rectangular, gray plastic case with a removeable lid. The lid is labeled, "Wollensak 3M / STEREO TAPE RECORDER." The case rests on four rubber feet and has a flat plastic strip handle on the front of the body of the case. The power cord is stored inside the case.

When the cover is removed, the top face of the instrument has a pair of spindles on either side to hold magnetic tape media on reels. A contol panel between the spindles has a left and right volume control, an on/off switch, a speaker volume on/off switch and a vertical bar-shaped control knob labeled, "FAST REWIND / FAST FORWARD." A strip of red labeling tape with white lettering reads, "CFBS EQUIPMENT POOL," and another strip reads, "Room 854."

A control panel along the bottom edge of the instrument has, from left to right, a dual microphone jack, labeled, "LEFT / RIGHT / MICROPHONE," a counter labeled, "INDEX COUNTER," a paper label marked, "T2," the insription "HARVARD / SOCIAL / RELATIONS / LAB." scratched into the metal, a switch labeled, "FAST / SLOW," and a button labeled, "ON / OFF."

A series of push button controls in the bottom center of the panel is labeled, "RECORD L / STOP / START / RECORD R."
