Description:
This is a mineral molecular model of crysoberil (Al2Be04) made of red, white, and black plastic spheres connected with rods and mounted on unfinished plywood. The model had a symmetrical, complex shape but one part of it has become disconnected.

The colors on the spheres represent the following elements:

White= oxygen (O)

Red= beryllium (Be)

Black= aluminum (Al)

There is a paper label on the plywood base that is typed and held in place with two thin nails and plexiglass.

Historical AttributesThis molecular model is part of a group in the Collection that were made by Harvard students for courses in geology and mineralogy between the early 1950s and the early 1970s. Some of the molecules were simple class assignments, whereas others are more complex and refer to recent publications. They remained in the Geology Department for display and instruction.

This one was made for the course Geology 107.
Curatorial RemarksThis model is somewhat unstable, since it was found in two pieces, only resting on 1 of 4 rods. One piece is no longer attached and couldn't be entirely re-assembled.
