FunctionA pencil is a tool for writing consisting of a tube of graphite (the "lead") embedded inside a cylinder of wood.
Curatorial RemarksThe Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602 pencil was discontinued in 1998, but it had a feverishly loyal following. These boxes of specially-engraved Blackwing 602s were purchased by Lionel Spiro when the model was set to be discontinued and inscribed with the name and address of the Boston Athenaeum, of which Spiro had been a board member.
