Curatorial RemarksGwendolyn Brooks published A Street in Bronzeville in 1945 with Harper & Brothers Publishers. Bronzeville is a historically Black neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, where Brooks lived most of her life. In 1950, Brooks was the first Black author to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Brooks wrote and published prolifically and has had an enormous impact on American poetry and on the creative culture of Chicago.

Brooks' other notable works include Annie Allen, Maud Martha, and In the Mecca.

The book is dedicated to Brooks's parents, David and Keziah.
