Description:
Compass with a silvered dial surrounded by a movable coil of wire on a wooden ring which registers on a semi-circular scale between ring and dial. Vertically curved wooden support, round molded wooden base.

FunctionThe cosine galvanometer measures strong electrical currents with a vertical coil, movable about a horizontal axis.
Historical AttributesProbably made and used by John Trowbridge, a Harvard Physics professor.
Curatorial RemarksAccording to Cathryn Carson (see card), this is probably a cosine galvanometer, not a tangent galvanometer, and was invented and constructed by Prof. John Trowbridge.
