Description:
This is a slide projector with two lenses that produced stereoscopic images. It used two 500-Watt lights, each controlled by a switch. The instrument is now stored in an old cardboard box, not original.

The machine is marked on one side: "PROJECT CHARLES 845 521"

FunctionUsed by Land for his experiments with color vision (Retinex theory).
Curatorial RemarksThis projector could have been associated with the Project Charles run by the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950s, which developed into SAGE, or the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment, an automated control system used by NORAD for collecting, tracking and intercepting enemy bomber aircraft from the late 1950s into the 1980s.
