Description:
rectangular ivory diptych sundial in form of a book
Diptych shaped like a book, complete with metal corners and clasps. Red and black patterns around the vertical and horizontal string-gnomon sundials. The vertical is marked V-XII-VII in gothic roman numerals, and the horizontal dial is marked 5-12-7.
The compass has a wind rose marked the points in abbreviated Latin (SE OR ME OC) and small faces representing the four winds. There is a t-shaped needle.
There is a well in the center of the vertical dial, which holds a glass disk with reverse painting and gold leaf. The image is worn, but appears to show a man and woman in close embrace, perhaps in bed.
The glass disk and the compass needle are stored separately in a modern, plastic container with the diptych. The compass needle is a modern replacement.
Leaf 1 of the diptych is split into two pieces. The glass cover and spring for the compass are missing.
