Description:
A lamp consisting of a tank in the shape of a hollow ring with a square cross section resting on three flat feet with rounded edges that curve outwards. The tank is connected to a base for the wick through a holder that allows to adjust the height of the wick. The wick itself is made of cotton clock that is held in the narrow space between two concentric brass rings that are the upper extension of the holder, and which can be protected by a small cap when not in use. Also attached to the tank are a large wooden handle that extends horizontally, and a vertical stand that holds a ring several inches above the wick with a diameter similar to the inner diameter of the tank.

There would originally be a removable glass chimney standing on the tank and extending upwards held in place by the ring stand.

FunctionThis is a lamp that is designed to burn fuel more efficienty and brightly by being better oxigenated. The narrow ring-shaped wick receives air from both the inside and outside of the ring, and this air is constantly refreshed by the presence of a tall chimney that extends upwards beyond the ring stand that keeps it in place.

Argand lamps were very common until the late 19th century. A similar example is found described on the following website.
Curatorial RemarksIdentical to 3754 except it has a protective cap over the wick.
