Description:
Rolled wall chart with a rectangular wood stretcher at the top and round wood stretcher at the bottom. The chart is made of paper and fabric (linen?), and has many scenes of mechanical vignettes of people working, such as a man with a ladder, a woman bringing up water from a well, and two men carrying a barrel on a stick. There are various weights and scales being demonstrated throughout the image, mechanical demonstrations juxtaposed with their human counterparts engaging in daily activities that reflect what is happening in the mechanized examples.

FunctionThese charts were part of Chambers's Educational Course, a series of reading books and related materials published by W & R Chambers of Edinburgh. The series was sold by subscription to schools and other educational institutions and contained subjects of instruction such as History and Geography, Drawing, English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Latin and other languages.
