Essex Institute

The Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts was a literary, historical, and scientific society, established in Essex County in 1821. As the Institute maintained a museum, library, and historic houses; arranged educational programs; and issued numerous scholarly publications.

In 1992 the Essex Institute merged with the Peabody Museum of Salem to form the Peabody Essex Museum.
