George Dance (II)
George Dance the Younger was born in 1741 in England. After attending St. Paul's School in London, he traveled to Italy to study architecture. Back in London in 1768, Dance succeeded his father, George Dance the Elder, as City of London surveyor and architect.
Dance was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He tought architecture there between 1798 to 1805.
After 1798, Dance became increasingly interested in art. He completed a number of chalk portraits of his friends; 72 of these were engraved and published.
Dance's architectural works included the rebuilding of All Hallows-on-the-Wall (1767), Newgate Prison (1770), and the Guildhall (1770); and the church of St. Bartholomew-the-Less (1797).
Dance died in 1825 and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
