Marburg Brothers
1865 - 1891
William A. Marburg Senior (1814-1873) was born in Germany in 1814, but came to the United States as a teenager, and set up a successful tobacco business in Baltimore, Maryland. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was considered the largest exporter of cigars in the country.
He retired and turned the business over to his sons, William A. Marburg, Jr. (b. 1849), Charles L. Marburg, and Louis H. Marburg, who formed the company, Marburg Brothers in 1865. In 1883, another brother, Albert M. Marburg joined the firm, and in 1885, yet another, Theodore Marburg. They manufactured smoking tobacco.
In May, 1891, the company sold its holdings to the American Tobacco Company. William A. Marburg was elected vice-president of this corporation.
