James Green

1808 - 1896

View All Objects
James Green worked in London before emigrating to the US, in Baltimore, in 1833. He later moved to New York in 1849. He was to become one of the foremost makers of barometers in America.

In the mid 1850s, Green designed an improved portable barometer based on Fortin's design which was used in surveys and by stations of the US Weather Bureau for many years. It was adopted by the Smithsonian Institution. The firm's name changed in 1885 to Henry J. Green (who was his nephew). The latter moved it to Brooklyn later, which he always signed "B'klyn".
