Jefferson Physical Laboratory, Harvard University
The Jefferson Physical Laboratory, a laboratory located within Harvard's Department of Physics, was founded in 1884 as a laboratory for physics research and teaching.
In 1870 John Trowbridge, a graduate of the Lawrence Scientific School, became assistant professor of physics. Trowbridge believed that physics instruction should emphasize hands-on laboratory work and active research. He and his approach were a major influence on the formation of the Jefferson Laboratory.
