Hugo Gernsback

1884 - 1967

Hugo Gernsback, (born Aug. 16, 1884, Luxembourg, Lux.—died Aug. 19, 1967, New York City, N.Y., U.S.), American inventor and publisher who was largely responsible for the establishment of science fiction as an independent literary form. His contributions to the genre as publisher were so significant that, that he is sometimes called “Father of Magazine SF” and has a crater on the Moon named after him. In his honor, annual awards presented at the World Science Fiction Convention are named the "Hugos".
