John Winthrop
1714 - 1779
John Winthrop was the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard from 1739 to 1779. One of the most prominent natural philosophers in the Colonies, he was a noted astronomer, educator, and was central in replacing instruments lost in the fire of 1764, sending agents to London to purchase replacements.
