Charles A. Spencer and Sons
This firm was established by Charles A. Spencer with his son Herbert R. Spencer after his previous partner, A. K. Eaton left the business, around 1865. Instruments were signed "C. A. Spencer & Sons, Canastota." In 1873, their shop was destroyed by fire. They strugged in a little barn until 1875 when they picked up and moved to Geneva , N.Y., associating themselves with the Geneva Optical Works. In 1877, they formed the partnership known as C. A. Spencer & Sons. Charles A. Spencer died in 1881.
Herbert Spencer carried on the business from 1880-1889 in Geneva, NY. In 1889, he relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where he established the H. R. Spencer Optical Company.
