Department of Psychology, Harvard University
founded 1934
At Harvard the "New Psychology" was pioneered by William James in the Department of Philosophy. James who offered his first formal course in physiological psychology in 1875-1876, and established a laboratory for psychological studies about that time. The first Ph.D. degree in "philosophy and psychology" was awarded to G. Stanley Hall in 1878. In 1891, James established the Harvard Psychological Laboratory in Dane Hall. In 1892, Hugo Munsterberg was appointed professor of experimental psychology and director of the Psychological Laboratory.
Psychology remained a discipline within the Philosophy Department when the department and laboratory moved to the new Emerson Hall in December 1905. In 1927, Morton Prince established the Psychology Clinic. He was followed by Henry A. Murray in 1928. Professor E. G. Boring (1886-1968) was the first chairman of the Psychology Department when it was separated from the Philosophy Department in 1934. The two programs remained linked through a divisional structure until 1936.
