Detroit Observatory, University of Michigan

The Detroit Obervatory is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was built in 1854, and was the first scientific research facility at the University of Michigan. President Henry Philip Tappan recruited Franz Brünnow, a German astronomer, as the first director of this early scientific laboratory. In 1973, the Detroit Observatory was listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in science, education, and architecture.
