Maker Info
William Bond
William Bond was born in Plymouth in 1754. He was apprenticed to Roger Berryman Symons of Plymouth, a goldsmith, in 1769. Bond then worked as a clockmaker and silversmith.
In 1784/5 Bond emigrated to North America, where he settled in Falmouth, Maine (now called Portland). He first became involved in cutting ship timber for export to England. He used the money earned to bring over his family.
The timber business was not successful, however, and Bond decided to relocate to Boston in 1793. In Boston, he returned to clockmaking and silversmithing. His shop was on the corner of the Milk Street and Marlborough (now Washington) Street.
William was joined in the business by his son, William Cranch Bond, who was born in Falmouth, Maine in 1789.
