Frank E. Hamilton
1898 - 1972
Francis (Frank) E. Hamilton was born in 1898. He joined CTR (a predecessor of IBM) in 1923 as a draftsman. He worked with Clair D. Lake and A. W. Mills in the development of many IBM products.
On the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (the ASCC sometimes referred to as the Harvard Mark I), Hamilton was responsible for the primary organization, design, and construction of the machine.
He was also responsible for the design and construction of the IBM Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator (SSEC) of 1948, which was more than 250 times as fast as the ASCC.
Hamilton developed the IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator of 1953, of which nearly 2,000 were delivered to customers in the 1950s and 1960s, more than any electronic computer of its time.
Hamilton became manager of IBM's Endicott Laboratory in 1954. He died in 1972.
