Frederick Gower
Frederic Allan Gower was an American inventor and entrepreneur who was involved with the development of the telephone in the 1800s. He had a Bell franchise in New England before moving to England in the 1880s. In England he helped design a telephone apparatus that was used by the British Post Office for many years.
To avoid infringing on Bell's patents, Gower developed an alternative version of a "watchcase" style receiver, which he patented before leaving the U.S. He marketed his designs as "Gower-Bell" receivers. This may have caused some tension with Bell and his partners, possibly contributing to Gower's move to England. In England, it has been suggested that Gower's telephones may have been manufactured in Manchester by Charles Mosely and Sons.
