Robert G. Brown
Robert G. Brown was an American engineer and inventor. In 1878 he invented a telephone handset while working for the Gold and Stock Exchange in New York. The device was not readily adopted, and Brown traveled to France, where he joined the Société Générale des Téléphones, or General Telephone Company as an engineer.
The Société Générale des Téléphones produced a telephone with Brown's handset in 1879, and the design became popular in Europe.
