Optische Anstalt C. P. Goerz
1890 - 1926
The Goerz firm was founded in 1886 as a mail order company by Carl Paul Goerz (1854-1923) and produced mathematical and drawing tools for schools. The company was located in Berlin-Friedenau, Rheinstrasse 44-46, Germany.
In 1888, Goerz bought the F. A. Hintze's mechanical workshop and started producing cameras. In 1889, the company started focusing on the production of lenses.
In 1890 the firm changed its name to Optische Anstalt C. P. Goerz, and expanded operations in Berlin. An American branch was established in New York City around 1902, and produced cameras. The American branch was renamed C.P. Goerz American Optical Company in 1905.
In 1926, the German branch merged with ICA and stopped its production. However, the American branch remained active until 1975.
