founded 1881
Gotthilf Lufft (1848-1921) was a laboratory assistant at the Stuttgart Polytechnic where he built apparatus for the faculty. In 1873 he took over the optical business of S. F Trostel in Stuttgart, and began making aneroid barometers.
In 1881 he founded the Mech. Werkstatt G. Lufft, situated at Katharinenstrasse 4. This firm produced aneroid barometers, hygrometers, and other meteorological instruments.
In 1897, the company built a bigger factory at Neue Weinsteige 22. Around this time, the company was renamed G. Lufft Metalbarometerfabrik G.M.B.H.
After the death of the founder, Gotthilf Lufft in 1921, his son-in-law and a company manager took charge of the business.
In 1928, Lufft bought E. Huë of Paris to expand their market in France. They sold it in 1939 before World War II, during which they produced altimeters for the German military.
In 1932, Lufft started to make bi-metallic thermometers.
The company is still in business and uses the name, G. Lufft Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH.
