Strategically located on Ill river; was Celtic settlement, passed to Romans; ruined by Attila 5th cen.; rebuilt by Franks; site of Oath of Strasbourg 842; held by bishops as part of German & then Holy Roman Empire 923-1262; damaged in WW II.
