Founded on site of Parthenope by refugees from Cumae; conquered by Romans 4th cen. BC; part of kingdoms of Ostrogoths, Byzantines & Muslims; went to Kingdom of Two Sicilies, then to popes, & back to Sicily; damaged in WW II, & by earthquake in 1980.
