Etruscan town was taken by Gallic Boii 4th cen. BC; was Roman colony ca. 190 BC; part of Greek exarchate of Ravenna 6th cen. AD, then went to pope; damaged in Goth & Hun invasions; internal Guelph-Ghibelline strife; thrived under Papal States from 1506.
