Description

Located on L bank of Rhein, at gateway to wine-growing region; founded as bridgehead in 17th cen. & developed later by Bavarian king, Ludwig I; was home of dramatist F Schiller; badly damaged in WW II & in disastrous explosion of chemical plants in 1948.
