Located on the Neckar river; was capital of Palatinate (Pfalz) from 13th cen.; site of publication of Calvinist profession of faith in 1563; declined in Thirty Years' War & was nearly leveled by French in 17th cen., but rebuilt; escaped damage in WW II.
