Description

Located at head of Narragansett Bay on Providence river; purchased by Roger Williams from Amerindians in 1636; grew as trade center for slaves, molasses & rum 1680s; destroyed British tea & housed troops in Revolutionary War; damaged in hurricane of 1938.
